Each time Isabelle Huppert’s Anne returns to the seaside town of Mohan she is a different woman; a new character in a completely different story. Hong Sang-soo gives us a trio of stories, each with its own very different interpretation of “Anne.” Each Anne has a history that complicates the relationship between her character and the man of the house at which she is staying, leading the woman of the house to feel competitive towards the foreigner she has welcomed into her home. However, it soon becomes clear that every Anne is very lonely and is relying on new experiences to redefine herself: Anne’s tough exterior masks naïveté. Huppert is spectacular as always and quite at home playing a woman with a sharp tongue who is accustomed to being forgiven. And yet, there is a side of Anne that is determined to find meaning in her story, to reconcile her murky past with the undeniable beauty and peace of the beach to which she continually returns.
