LAURENCE ANYWAYS World Cinema

Prolific Canadian filmmaker Xavier Dolan returns to AFI FEST with his latest passionate rollercoaster ride of unattainable love. Set in the ‘90s, LAURENCE ANYWAYS narrates the story of Laurence, a handsome high school teacher and writer who is madly in love with his girlfriend, Fred. Their joyful life is turned upside down when Laurence announces his transexuality and his choice to live as a woman. Fred vows to support Laurence during his transition, but the couple’s new lifestyle clashes with friends, family, and society in general. Above everything, LAURENCE ANYWAYS is an epic love story that examines a couple’s inability to exist without each other. Complete with wild hair and lush costumes, Dolan’s filmmaking style is comparable to cinema masters like Pedro Almodóvar. Only 23 years old, Dolan premiered his third film at the Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard section, further establishing him as Quebec’s filmmaking prodigy.

Xavier Dolan first appeared on screen at age four in a series of TV commercials. He has since acted in numerous films including J’EN SUIS and MARTYRS. His celebrated debut feature, I KILLED MY MOTHER (AFI FEST 2009) has received over 30 international awards including the Prix Regard Jeure at the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight. His second film HEARTBEATS was also an Official Selection at AFI FEST 2010.
