CAUCUS American Independents

Every four years, a new cast of presidential hopefuls congregates in Iowa. The first state to hold its caucuses, Iowa serves as both a training ground and a battleground for the primary candidates. AJ Schnack’s documentary takes us behind the scenes of straw polls and sound bites to watch the 2012 field of Republican prospects polish their platforms, solidify their stances and butt heads for the first time. This on-the-ground documentary captures everything from missed cues and awkward interactions to electoral triumphs. Featuring Michelle Bachmann, Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, Rick Perry, Mitt Romney and others, with an especially intimate look at the campaign of Rick Santorum, CAUCUS is a surprisingly honest portrayal of the individuals who seek to lead the country and the systems that define U.S. politics.

CAUCUS(AFI DOCS 2013) is the fifth non-fiction feature by AJ Schnack. His previous films include 2002’s GIGANTIC (A TALE OF TWO JOHNS), KURT COBAIN ABOUT A SON (AFI FEST 2006), CONVENTION (2009) and WE ALWAYS LIE TO STRANGERS (2013). He is the Founding Director of the Cinema Eye Honors for Nonfiction Filmmaking in New York City.
