MOEBIUS World Cinema

Originally banned in its native country for its extreme nature, master provocateur Kim Ki-duk’s latest masterstroke drives well past all conventional boundaries with purpose and poise, resulting in the filmmaker’s most audacious opus yet. Shot with a micro-budget sensibility surprising for such an established icon, this Oedipal tragedy begins with a family in turmoil. Spurned by her husband for a younger woman, the matriarch attempts to slice off his offending member, but when she fails to do so, takes her revenge by removing her unwitting son’s instead. So begins an odyssey that elevates horrifying acts of gang rape, mutilation and other taboo-busting atrocities into the level of high art. Willed into existence by an extraordinarily singular vision, MOEBIUS skillfully unfolds without any of its characters speaking a single word. Plunging energetically into untold depths of depravity and existential crises, the narrative hurtles forward with remarkable momentum, jaw-dropping clarity and relentless tonal mastery.

Kim Ki-duk is one of South Korea’s most controversial filmmakers, often probing violent or gritty subject matter with visual flair. After stints in the marines and living as a painter in France, his subsequent film career has included THE ISLE, SAMARITAN GIRL, 3-IRON and the Venice Film Festival Golden Lion-winning PIETA (AFI FEST 2012).
