OUR SUNHI World Cinema

Both longtime devotees as well as strangers to the work of Hong Sang-soo will find a delightful meeting point with the prolific auteur’s 15th feature. Hong’s second film this year alone, and one of his most accessible efforts, finds him cleverly toying with variations on some of his favorite archetypes: self-involved people with misogynist tendencies who both make films and teach, all lusting after the same woman, as the drama plays out within a series of lengthy (and often drunken) conversations that devolve into hilarity and heartbreak. The latest cavalcade of characters revolves around Sunhi, a recent film school grad unsure of her future, and her interactions with three men in her life, all of whom seek to define her. Unfolding in long, observant takes, Hong opts for a lighthearted, rather than searing, approach. Gently satirical and endearing, OUR SUNHI is a welcome addition to the director’s ouevre.

A leading auteur of South Korean cinema, Hong Sang-soo was born in Seoul but studied film at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His structurally complex portraits of everyday relationships can be seen in VIRGIN STRIPPED BARE BY HER BACHELORS, WOMAN ON THE BEACH and more recent films HA HA HA (AFI FEST 2010), OKI’S MOVIE (AFI FEST 2010), THE DAY HE ARRIVES (AFI FEST 2011) and IN ANOTHER COUNTRY (AFI FEST 2012).
