BUZZARD American Independents

Festival alum Joel Potrykus returns with his second feature, BUZZARD, starring APE (AFI FEST 2012) actor Joshua Burge. Marty Jackitansky is a disillusioned temp at a mortgage office, out to get what he feels he deserves. When he isn’t wasting time on the clock, Marty makes extra cash by scamming the bank and several other companies to fuel his lifestyle of eating frozen pizza and crafting a homemade Freddy Krueger glove. After he steals a stack of checks from work, he is forced to go into hiding at his co-worker Derek’s house. Potrykus, who also co-stars as Derek, expertly crafts a dark comedy that taps into the world of low-wage workers who don’t have health insurance and are living paycheck to paycheck. Burge plays Marty with just the right amount of bitterness and boredom, leaving us with a caustic yet somehow completely relatable protagonist.

Film critic and filmmaker Joel Potrykus began making movies in high school. He attended film school in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he still lives. His first feature, APE (AFI FEST 2012), premiered at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland. BUZZARD is his second feature; it premiered at SXSW 2014.
