YESTERDAY, TODAY AND TOMORROW (IERI, OGGI, DOMANI) Cinema's Legacy

Vittorio De Sica’s YESTERDAY, TODAY AND TOMORROW is a unique, three-part omnibus film featuring the megawatt star coupling of Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni. The iconic actors here are in comedic mode, as they play three sets of couples from different parts of Italy, all exploring gender dynamics and sexual mores. With exquisite Cinemascope cinematography and equally impressive Christian Dior costumes, YESTERDAY, TODAY AND TOMORROW was the biggest domestic hit of De Sica and Loren’s collaboration. The film’s finale – with Loren’s legendary striptease and Mastroianni barking like a dog to show his ecstatic approval – is enough to ensure that this instant classic will be a Cinema Legacy crowd-pleaser.

Vittorio De Sica (1901-1974) was a preeminent figure of Italian neorealism. Four of his films won Oscars®: YESTERDAY, TODAY AND TOMORROW and THE GARDEN OF THE FINZI-CONTINIS both scored Best Foreign Language Film, while honorary awards went to SHOESHINE and BICYCLE THIEVES. The latter is generally considered one of the most influential films ever made.
