FOXCATCHER Galas

FOXCATCHER is the true story of Olympic wrestler brothers Mark and Dave Schultz, whose lives were forever altered by unhinged multimillionaire John du Pont. Channing Tatum dominates the screen as Mark, a hulking former champion who seems as lost for words as he is bereft of friendship. Dave (Mark Ruffalo) is also a gold medalist, but he prioritizes his role of husband and father over his athletic career. When Mark is beckoned to the estate of the reclusive du Pont (Steve Carell), little does he know that he is entering into a darkly uneasy protégé-benefactor relationship, which will last years before spiraling tragically out of control. A transformed Carell disappears into the role of du Pont, whose sad, childlike demeanor suggests traumas and deep-seated inadequacies. Director Bennett Miller (MONEYBALL) keeps the audience in thrall, expertly dialing up the suspense until the film’s explosive conclusion.

Bennett Miller, a New York City native, received an Academy Award® nomination for Best Director for his narrative feature debut, CAPOTE, for which Philip Seymour Hoffman won Best Actor. Miller’s follow-up, MONEYBALL, scored six nominations, including Best Picture. Winner of Best Director at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, FOXCATCHER is his latest film.
