GÜEROS New Auteurs

After pushing his mother to her limit with a prank involving a water balloon and a baby stroller, teenage Tomás is sent to live with big brother Sombra and his roommate Santos, who are up to their own shenanigans while studying at the local university. Young malcontents in search of a movement, the trio finds cause for an oddball road-trip adventure when they learn their musical hero, a man who once moved Bob Dylan to tears and is linked to their father, is dying. The three traverse the city, combating apathy, rebellion and everything in between, to pay their last respects. Shot in black-and-white and 4:3 aspect ratio, director Alonso Ruizpalacios’ debut feature is imbued with playful energy and whimsical gusto – imaginatively employing classic new wave tactics with a captivating style all its own.

Alonso Ruizpalacios was born in 1978 in Mexico City. His short film CAFÉ PARAÍSO won Mexico’s Silver Ariel Award. He scored another Silver Ariel for his third short, THE CÚ BIRD’S LAST SONG. His debut feature, GÜEROS, won Best First Feature at this year’s Berlinale.
