RUN New Auteurs

In his ambitious narrative feature debut, director Philippe Lacôte balances fantasy with vérité to illuminate the frayed world of a fatherless young man growing up in the Ivory Coast. The orphaned boy, who dreams of ascending to the throne of a wise rainmaker, apprentices under the reigning master, only to reject his final call of duty and instead become a fugitive political assassin. This West African mystic fable contains extended flashback sequences with ironic twists, deconstructing a drifting young life predestined for murder. RUN is the fictional offshoot of Lacôte’s 2008 documentary, CHRONICLES OF WAR IN THE IVORY COAST, where he captured violent rebellions and civil strife within his hometown.

Philippe Lacôte’s background is in documentary film. In 2002, he made CAIRO HOURS, and in 2008, he created a film essay on the Ivory Coast’s rebellion, CHRONICLES OF WAR IN THE IVORY COAST. RUN, Lacôte’s first narrative feature, played in Un Certain Regard at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
