For more than 25 years, a quiet menace crept in secret through the shadows of South Central Los Angeles. In 2010, police arrested a suspect in the brutal murders of at least 10 women. Documentary provocateur Nick Broomfield, whose gifted eye has an uncanny knack for finding truth amidst America’s chaotic inequalities, turns his gaze toward the notorious “Grim Sleeper” – the case of alleged serial killer Lonnie Franklin, Jr., suspected in connection with more than 100 unsolved crimes. The film explores a cross-section of Franklin’s friends, neighbors, associates and contemporaries, many of whom were completely unaware of his activities. Supported by harrowing testimony of survivors, Broomfield’s documentary provides a scathing examination of a broken system.
