FREE IN DEED World Cinema

Based on true events, FREE IN DEED tells the story of a young mother struggling to raise her special-needs son. When she turns to a local storefront church for help, a lonely Pentecostal minister is forced to confront his own demons as he wrestles with the boy’s seemingly incurable illness. Writer/director Jake Mahaffy spent almost a decade working on this follow-up to his previous film WELLNESS (AFI FEST 2008). Mahaffy’s eye for crafting intimate and unusual compositions immerses the audience in the world of his characters. What results is a tremendous movie, illustrating how a village comes together to help a child. With stunning and heartbreaking performances from David Harewood and Edwina Findley, FREE IN DEED is not to be missed. –Lane Kneedler

Jake Mahaffy’s micro-budget movies have screened at the Sundance, Rotterdam and Venice film festivals. He studied fine arts and filmmaking at the Rhode Island School of Design, and directing at the Russian State Institute of Cinematography in Moscow. His previous feature, WELLNESS, screened at AFI FEST 2008. He currently teaches at the University of Auckland, New Zealand.
