THE LURE Midnight

Set in 1980s Warsaw, Agnieska Smoczy’nska’s debut film follows Silver and Golden, a pair of man-eating mermaid sisters who take human form to explore the world outside of their ocean home. Upon their arrival in this new world, Silver falls in love with the son of a musical family. They track him to a nearby cabaret where his family performs nightly and where the sisters land jobs, performing songs and transforming themselves back into their fishy counterparts. Things get tricky when prolonged time away from the water takes a toll on the girls’ health, and they must give in to their craving for human flesh. Smoczy’nska adds entertaining musical elements to this horror-fantasy odyssey, part THE LITTLE MERMAID and part THE PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE. What results is a refreshing genre tale that plays with your expectations and revels in the bloodlust. — Jenn Murphy
