ON BODY AND SOUL (TESTRŐL ÉS LÉLEKRŐL) World Cinema

Mária is the newly hired quality control specialist at a Budapest slaughterhouse. Her supervisor, an older man named Endre, is beloved by the slaughterhouse’s co-workers. Meanwhile, Mária is resented for her exacting standards. After striking up an awkward friendship, the two co-workers are astonished to learn they share the same nightly dream. Could this unexpected metaphysical connection be an echo of future romance between Mária and Endre? With this astonishing premise, director Ildikó Enyedi, after an 18-year absence from feature filmmaking, has created a work of pure cinema, a love story of assured and mature filmmaking that plunges the audience into a dreamlike and uncanny world. – Lane Kneedler

Born in Budapest, Hungary, Ildikó Enyedi wrote and directed several short films before her feature MY 20TH CENTURY premiered at the 1989 Cannes Film Festival, winning the Camera d’Or and continuing on to play AFI FEST. Her latest film ON BODY AND SOUL won the Golden Bear at the 2017 Berlin Film Festival.
