MAGIC ’85 Short Films

During the height of the AIDS epidemic in LA, Gabriel, a lonely hospice worker, helps lead his patients to a conscious death. An AFI Conservatory Thesis Film.

Annika Kurnick recently graduated from the directing program at the AFI Conservatory (Class of 2017) with the MFA that now mocks her BFA in Drama from NYU. Her AFI thesis film MAGIC ’85 was awarded the Alfred P. Sloan Production Grant in 2017 for its exploration of the AIDS virus through merging molecular animation and projection mapping. Fun fact: the bathhouse scenes in MAGIC ’85 were shot in a Catholic girls’ middle school.
