DIAMANTINO World Cinema

He’s not the sharpest tool in the shed, but when Portuguese soccer god Diamantino is on the field, his head filled with visions of giant Pekingese puppies frolicking in cotton-candy clouds, he transforms into a football Adonis with a heart of gold. But when he misses a crucial penalty kick, costing his troubled nation a shot at glory and his manager-father his life, the star athlete tumbles into a spiral of self-doubt. He becomes an unwitting victim to his conniving twin sisters, as well as ruthless scientists, a pair of undercover lesbian federal agents and far-right nationalists determined to “make Portugal great again” in this freewheeling and delightfully sharp, off-the-wall feature debut from co-directors Gabriel Abrantes and Daniel Schmidt, winner of the 2018 Cannes Critics’ Week Grand Prize. – Cedar Sherbert
