SHOPLIFTERS (MANBIKI KAZOKU) World Cinema

The winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, SHOPLIFTERS tells the tender story of a family of misfits and grifters struggling to make ends meet, but happily making the most of life together in Tokyo. After finding a young girl out in the cold, Osamu and his wife agree to take the girl in — despite now having yet another mouth to feed. It isn’t kidnapping, they agree, if they aren’t asking for a ransom, and besides, she’ll be happier with a family who loves her more. But then a sudden incident begins to unravel their lives, exposing secrets and testing their bonds. Director Hirokazu Kore-eda returns to the screen with a nuanced class critique, and a beautiful portrait of family life. – Sarah Harris
