TOO LATE TO DIE YOUNG (TARDE PARA MORIR JOVEN) World Cinema

Chilean filmmaker Dominga Sotomayor has only made three films in her nascent career but she has already developed a mature and singular aesthetic style. TOO LATE TO DIE YOUNG transports us to the 1990s Chilean countryside, where a group of young families have retreated from modern society to build a more utopian world for their children, away from capitalism and dogmatic ideas about family structures. As the adults experiment to build a more ideal society, the children are less interested in breaking societal taboos and instead grapple with the classic issues of adolescence. In this humid landscape, the haze of hormones and pop songs suffuse the atmosphere more than anything else. This heady concoction of ’90s nostalgia and adolescent sexual tension will leave you lightheaded and swooning long after the final frame. – Lane Kneedler

Dominga Sotomayor studied Audiovisual Directing at Universidad Católica de Chile, and received a master’s degree in Directing at ESCAC in Barcelona. She developed her first feature THURSDAY TILL SUNDAY at the Cannes Cinéfondation Residence. The film won the Tiger Award at Rotterdam in 2012 and screened at more than 100 festivals. In 2013, she co-directed THE ISLAND, which also won the Tiger. TOO LATE TO DIE YOUNG is her third feature.
