THE TWO POPES Galas

THE TWO POPES

After serving as pope for eight years, Pope Benedict XVI summons his ideological rival, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, to the Vatican summer home. Historically, popes are meant to serve the Catholic Church until their final breath, but Benedict tells him he’s decided to abdicate the position, which no pope has done in more than 700 years.  As the two men discuss their views of the roles of the papacy and everything it represents, the Church is slowly transformed.  This transfer of power from Pope Benedict to Francis immediately and viscerally changes the course of the world’s most powerful religious body. Peering inside this cloistered world, director Fernando Meirelles (CITY OF GOD) masterfully pulls back the curtain on a rarefied world.
