Director François Girard (HOCHELAGA, LAND OF SOULS) takes Norman Lebrecht’s acclaimed novel and orchestrates a stellar ensemble as its players in this potent film about two Jewish boys, connected by World War II. Spanning generations, the story follows violin prodigies Martin and Dovidl who grow close as kids because of their love of music, but the two become mysteriously separated at Dovidl’s premiere performance. Years later, the adult Martin (Tim Roth) embarks on a transcontinental journey in search of his beloved friend (Clive Owen). To find a future together, they must first embrace their pasts. A parade of grand performances, other highlights in this tour de force include the young actors and their impeccable recitals. –Eric Moore

François Girard has earned wide international recognition as much for his filmmaking as for his staging of operas and theater plays. In 1993, his feature film THIRTY-TWO SHORT FILMS ABOUT GLENN GOULD garnered international success including four top Genie Awards. Five years later he directed THE RED VIOLIN, featuring Samuel L. Jackson, which received an Academy Award® for Best Original Score and won eight Genie Awards and nine Jutra Awards. SILK (2007) was adapted from Alessandro Baricco’s best-selling book and stars Michael Pitt, Keira Knightley and Alfred Molina. SILK received four Jutra Awards. His film BOYCHOIR (2015) features Dustin Hoffman, Kathy Bates and Eddie Izzard among others. HOCHELAGA, LAND OF SOULS (2017) was presented at the Toronto Film Festival and represented Canada in the race for Best Foreign Language Film Oscar at the 90th Academy Awards®.
