In this outrageous, transgressive thriller, Brazilian auteur Kleber Mendonça Filho teams with longtime collaborator Juliano Dornelles in a decidedly unconventional approach to genre cinema. A sci-fi western and modern colonialist critique, BACURAU takes place in the not-so-distant future in a remote Brazilian village whose inhabitants have come together for the funeral of the town matriarch. Already subsisting on limited resources, amid clashing personalities and deep-seated conflicts, they soon realize that their town has been erased from the map. When the water supply is cut, cell phone coverage fades and a local family is murdered, it becomes clear to them that they are under attack. Tension explodes into an all-out war as the community bands together in an organized resistance, determined to survive the assault. –Malin Kan

Bios

Born in 1980 in Recife, Juliano Dornelles is a founding member of the creation group Siìmio Filmes. Working as a Production Designer for more than 16 years, his partnership with Kleber Mendonça Filho started on the set of the short film ELETRODOMEìSTICA (2004). He was also the Production Designer of Filho’s NEIGHBORING SOUNDS and AQUARIUS. He has written and directed short films and video clips, and O ATELIÊ DA RUA DO BRUM was his feature directing debut.

Kleber Mendonça Filho was born in 1968 in Recife, northeastern Brazil. After graduating college, Kleber worked as a journalist for Jornal do Commercio, while also writing for Folha de S. Paulo and other publications. In the 1990s, he made several documentaries and experimental shorts produced through his own company, CinemaScoìpio. In 2012, Kleber made his debut feature, NEIGHBORING SOUNDS, in Recife. In 2016, his second feature film, AQUARIUS, was selected in Competition at the Cannes Film Festival. It was awarded Best Foreign Film from the French Syndicate of Cinema Critics and was nominated in the Best Foreign Film category at the Cesar.
