CHILD OF THE LAND (KAMA’ĀINA)

Following the program, AFI Festivals Programmer Eric Moore leads a conversation between filmmakers Yi Tang (BLACK GOAT), Em Weinstein (IN FRANCE MICHELLE IS A MAN’S NAME), Seungee Kim (TIGER & OX), Erica Tremblay (LITTLE CHIEF), Inès Girihiwe (BREAKING GROUND), Johnson Cheng (LONELY BLUE NIGHT), Kimi Howl Lee (CHILD OF LAND).

After suffering abuse from her stepfather, a queer 16-year-old girl, Mahina, must navigate life on the streets until she eventually finds refuge at Hawaiʻi’s largest organized homeless encampment.

Kimi Howl Lee is a biracial television writer and director from New York City and a graduate of Stanford University’s Film Studies program. Kimi was a participant in Film Independent’s 2019 Episodic Lab and the 2020 Breaking Through the Lens Directors Fellowship. Kimi is currently repped by UTA and Kaplan Perrone.
