HOPPER/WELLES World Cinema

HOPPER/WELLES

Following the film, AFI Festivals Programmer Malin Kan leads a conversation between producer Filip Jan Rymsza and editor Bob Murawski.

Found in 2017 amid 1,083 reels of production footage from Orson Welles’ THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND, this monumental extended conversation between Welles and Dennis Hopper pits Classic Hollywood against New Hollywood in an endlessly entertaining sparring of wit and intellect. Each having turned their generation of moviemaking on its head, the two creative minds traverse an impossible-to-predict range of topics, seemingly from opposite, though equally incendiary, perspectives. In a room minimally and beautifully lit solely by hurricane lamps and the radiating glow of the fireplace, Welles, using his trademark over-eloquent manner of speech, is tremendously pleased to have met his match in Hopper and can almost be heard grinning sardonically off-camera. Cinephiles would be remiss to pass over this memorable opportunity to bask in the strangeness of this conversation. –Malin Kan

Orson Welles acted in and staged a series of productions before achieving instant fame in 1938 with the radio broadcast THE WAR OF THE WORLDS. Signing a major contract at RKO in 1941, he earned a worldwide reputation by directing and starring in CITIZEN KANE, which ranked #1 on AFI’s original list of the greatest American movies ever made. He also directed THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI, OTHELLO, MACBETH, TOUCH OF EVIL and CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT.
