SUNDOWN

Michel Franco returns to AFI FEST with his latest film which follows a family emergency that summons siblings Neil and Alice Bennett away from their luxurious Acapulco vacation and back to London, with Neil conveniently discovering his passport has disappeared, keeping him in Mexico with thin promises of a speedy return. Armed with his family’s wealth and free of obligations, Neil quickly takes up residence at a budget motel, befriending a shady network of locals and tending to a budding romance with salesclerk Berenice. Yet as he increasingly becomes a stranger to his own family in a tourist economy where everyone needs a hustle to get by, the weight of privilege and his own devastating secret begin taking over his life, leading to an unforeseen tragedy and a reckoning with the effects of capital and the desires of the soul. –Cedar Sherbert
