MOSQUITA Y MARI (2012) Guest Artistic Director

MOSQUITA Y MARI (2012)

Screening to be followed by a conversation with director Aurora Guerrero, actors Venecia Troncoso, Fenessa Pineda, and Laura Patalano.

When Yolanda Olveros meets her new neighbor Mari Rodriguez, all they see in each other are their differences. A sheltered only child, Yolanda’s sole concern is fulfilling her parents’ dream of a college-bound future. With her father’s recent death, streetwise Mari, the elder of two, carries the weight of her sister as their mother works to keep them above water. But despite their contrasting realities, Yolanda and Mari are soon brought together when Mari is threatened with expulsion after saving Yolanda from an incident at school. The girls forge a friendship that soon proves more complex than anticipated when they unexpectedly share an intimate moment.

Aurora Guerrero is a Chicana, queer-identified writer/director born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. She has recently been directing in television with episodes of LITTLE AMERICA, BLINDSPOTTING, THE WILDS, MR CORMAN and QUEEN SUGAR, among many others. Her first short film, PURA LENGUA premiered at Sundance Film Festival in 2005. Her follow up feature MOSQUITA Y MARI also premiered at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. She is currently developing projects with Skydance, Array, and Family Owned.
