LIVING Red Carpet Premieres

LIVING

Screening to be followed by a conversation with Bill Nighy, director Oliver Hermanus and writer Kazuo Ishiguro.

Set in post-World War II London, Mr. Williams, played by a gentlemanly Bill Nighy at his career best, leads a mundane existence living with his detached son and cold daughter-in-law. He promptly takes the train to his bureaucratic job as civil servant, and with ease, lets papers pile and public requests linger to a standstill. That is, until he learns he is suffering from an incurable illness that will soon lead to his demise. Faced with death, Mr. Williams stops showing up to work without explanation. He wanders to the seaside where he meets free-spirited Sutherland (Tom Burke) and continues to drift until he is struck by a revelation. Williams decides to make a final, lasting change before parting, surprising his colleagues with a newfound tenacity. Filmmaker Oliver Hermanus (MOFFIE) reimagines Akira Kurosawa’s masterwork IKIRU in this poignant tale that grapples with the meaning of life and the notion that death can instigate a reawakening.

Oliver Hermanus debuted his first film, SHIRLEY ADAMS, at the 62nd Locarno Film Festival. His second, SKOONHEID, played at the 64th Cannes Film Festival. His third, THE ENDLESS RIVER, premiered at the 72nd Venice Film Festival and MOFFIE (2019) premiered at the 76th Venice Film Festival.
