THE EIGHT MOUNTAINS

North American Premiere

In THE EIGHT MOUNTAINS, based on the award-winning novel of the same name by Paolo Cognetti, two friends navigate a lifelong friendship. Twelve-year-old Pietro (Luca Marinelli) is vacationing with his family in a remote alpine village when he meets Bruno (Alessandro Borghi), one of its 14 inhabitants. Throughout the next three decades, Pietro will visit each year, his family escaping bustling Turin to summit the surrounding mountains. Bruno remains, building a modest life amid the sprawling expanse. As the two come into adulthood their friendship evolves in surprising ways, seemingly predetermined by their origins, their relationships with their fathers, and with the surrounding landscape. This sprawling, but delicate tale of friendship, featuring stunning cinematography, was written and directed by Oscar®-nominated Belgian filmmakers Felix van Groeningen and Charlotte Vandermeersch (THE BROKEN CIRCLE BREAKDOWN), and shared the Jury Prize in this year’s Cannes competition. –Malin Kan
