FOUR DAUGHTERS (LES FILLES D’OLFA) Documentary

FOUR DAUGHTERS (LES FILLES D’OLFA)

Tunisia’s Oscar® submission for Best International Feature

Screening to be followed by a conversation with director Kaouther Ben Hania.

In this hybrid docu-fiction from Oscar®-nominated filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania (THE MAN WHO SOLD HIS SKIN), Tunisian mother of four, Olfa, recounts and re-enacts scenes from her life with her two younger daughters. Olfa’s two older daughters are mysteriously absent, and throughout the film the truth of their disappearance is gradually unveiled. Assembled from a combination of emotionally candid interviews and dramatic re-enactments, Ben Hania takes us on a compelling, self-reflexive journey into the trauma of a family of women who, despite loving one another immensely, possess years of pent-up animosity. The film also reflects on the nature of storytelling, performance and crafting one’s own personal narrative. FOUR DAUGHTERS is unlike most documentaries you’ll see this year with its distinctive approach and sense that we’re peering into an intensely cathartic family therapy session. Winner of the Golden Eye Award for Best Documentary at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and Tunisia’s Oscar® entry for Best International Feature. –Julia Kipnis
