COBWEB (GEOMIJIP) Luminaries

COBWEB (GEOMIJIP)

No stranger to a myriad of genre play, Kim Jee-woon revisits his comedic strand for this metatextual farce on filmmaking. Set in the ‘70s depression period when the censorship board heavily controlled the silver screen in South Korea, Song Kang-ho (PARASITE) plays a struggling director searching for a career comeback. As another underwhelming production draws near an end, the emergence of a loophole and the promise of acclaim hailing back to his glory days send the crew into a frenzied re-shoot. Delightfully toying with elements of the film-within-a-film, Kim exploits melodrama and slapstick comedy into perfect alchemy, at once satirizing and celebrating the joys and pains of the film industry. As the plot thickens and disputes heat up, COBWEB spirals into a climax no one – crew and audience alike – will be prepared for. –Anna Li

COBWEB is the 10th feature film from director Kim Jee-woon. Without replicating his past work or repeating genres, Kim Jee-woon has opened a new chapter in Korean cinema with his imagination, style and unique characters. Even in the most intense moments, he never loses his sense of humor or humanity.
