THE END WE START FROM

U.S. Premiere

Screening to be followed by a conversation with director Mahalia Belo.

Postpartum meets post apocalypse in BAFTA award-winning British director Mahalia Belo’s (ELLEN, THE LONG SONG) trope-busting feature debut, a tense survival thriller that doubles as an astute meditation on the life-changing – sometimes bitterly lonely – experience of birth and new parenthood. After going into labor with her first child during catastrophic flooding, a new mother (Jodie Comer, KILLING EVE), her partner (Joel Fry, OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH) and newborn baby flee their submerged London home to seek refuge with family in the English countryside. As resources become increasingly scarce and the situation ever more desperate, the pair are forced to move on, beginning a journey across a country on the brink of societal collapse. Based on Megan Hunter’s bestselling 2017 novel and featuring an all-star supporting cast including Mark Strong, Katherine Waterston and Benedict Cumberbatch (who also produced the film), Belo’s film tackles the topical subject matter with a distinctive sense of empathy, emphasizing the human connections that ultimately make survival possible, and drawing on British post-apocalyptic classics like CHILDREN OF MEN, 28 DAYS LATER and THREADS to craft a rare doomsday drama that both serves as a dire warning and allows for the possibility of hope. –Abbie Algar

Mahalia Belo was born and currently lives in London, England. She studied Fine Art at Central Saint Martins and Directing at the UK’s National Film and Television School. Her graduating film VOLUME (2012) premiered at Sundance and won the BIFA for Best Short.
