THE SHROUDS Luminaries

THE SHROUDS

Following the death of his wife (Diane Kruger), businessman Karsh (Vincent Cassel) conceives of a technology that permits video access to monitor the decomposition of loved ones from inside the grave. In staggering 8K resolution detail, Karsh zooms in on his wife’s decaying remains to discover strange growths on her bones. Disturbed and confused, Karsh has only begun to investigate their source when his wife’s grave and others are subject to desecration, a seeming moral attack on the concept of GraveTech. Karsh enlists his hacker ex-brother-in-law (Guy Pearce), to assist in an investigation that will unravel into a conspiracy that spans medical corruption to espionage. Premiering at the Cannes Film Festival, THE SHROUDS sees Canadian filmmaker David Cronenberg return to home territory, of body horror and the grotesque, this time with an astoundingly autobiographical lens. Rendering grief a physical process, akin to the decomposition of a corpse, Cronenberg incites profoundly emotional insights on death, loss and mourning. –Malin Kan
