SELENA Y LOS DINOS Documentary

SELENA Y LOS DINOS

Screening to be followed by a conversation with director Isabel Castro.

For any Latino growing up in the ’90s, Selena Quintanilla’s big, melodious voice could be heard around the clock belting out romantic ballads. The story of her rise from child singer performing in low-key joints in Corpus Christi as the lynchpin of the Tejano band Selena y Los Dinos to regularly selling out stadium tours as the “Queen of Tejano Music” is lovingly told using never-before-seen archival footage in this celebratory portrait from filmmaker Isabel Castro. Executive produced by Selena’s family, who shared their extensive personal archive of photos, home movies and early interviews with Castro, SELENA Y LOS DINOS presents the famed singer as a down-to-earth and charming young woman with a big heart. Alongside the nostalgic footage are heartfelt interviews with Selena’s family and bandmates that illuminate not only her life and legacy, but their own contributions to the music that moved an entire generation. Editor Carolina Siraqyan expertly weaves this bounteous material to capture Selena’s vivacious energy and bring the Latin American icon back to life. –Javier Chavez
