Set in Tel-Aviv in 1962, this film tells the story of Eastern European holocaust survivors Rosa and Menachem Goldfarb who emigrated to Israel after the war. The Goldfarbs are experiencing a common dilemma: the troubled daily existence in the young state, versus the dream to emigrate to another, better place “over the ocean” where life is easier and more comfortable. Winner of nine major Israeli film awards, Over the Ocean’s humorous, touching observations on the foundations of family life and nationalism are given political and emotional weight by its setting in the growing years of the Israeli state.
