THE LONG WINTER (EL LARGO INVIERNO) Latino Cinema

A moving tribute to Catalans opposing the fascists just before the 1939 fall of Barcelona. Director/co-writer Camino recreates with sweeping touches the intrigues, violence, and misery of that winter, threading into the historical upheaval a love story between an idealistic surgeon and a U.S. freedom fighter. The fleeing refugees, the arrival of Franco’s troops and the pitiless aftermath are superbly captured. Handsome production values, topnotch performances and a touching script make this one of Spain’s top films of the year. -Peter Besas, Variety
