Arnold Barkus’ imaginatively crafted, offbeat tale of three young immigrants Anton, a naive Polish sailor, arrives in New York and wreaks havoc in the lives of Wadeck and his French roommate Barbara. Much of the story focuses on Barbara as she searches for an American husband and tries to get rid of the unbearable Wadeck, a coke-fiend paranoiac, and the annoying Anton. Mike Spiller’s expressionistic camera smoothly glides into the charming fantasy worlds of the characters. -Deborah McCrae.
