EXILE European Cinema

Internationally acclaimed Australian director Paul Cox’s (A Woman’s Tale) challenging new film is a spiritual adventure in the tradition of Robinson Crusoe. Based on E.L. Grant Watson’s novel Priest Island, the story is set in Australia during the last century. A young man, Peter, is caught stealing sheep he needs as a dowry to marry his beloved. Banished to a remote island, he must learn to survive in nature while fighting the demons of his past and the ghosts of his present. A wild-spirited young woman joins him there and within their isolation a unique love blossoms, which is dictated as much by the unpredictability of nature as by their growing passion for each other. Using exquisite visuals, a rich, mood-setting score, and an expert young cast, Cox creates a spellbinding exploration of man’s relationship with nature.
