FALSE PREGNANCY (GROSSESSE NERVEUSE) European Cinema

This irresistible black comedy was awarded Germany’s prestigious Max Ophuls Prize. Mildly misanthropic Martin discovers that a former lover is expecting his child. However, Sally doesn’t want his help in raising the baby. For Martin, this is the beginning of a series of tragic and comic events. He tries to convince Sally of his rights as a father and ends up falling in love with her. To make matters worse, his mother, an advocate of zeropopulation growth, demands an immediate abortion, while his ex-wife wants the baby for herself. But this is just the beginning of 35-year-old Martin’s madcap, if belated, sprint to aqulthood. This wild and witty comedy is a hilarious take on love, in a world where “family values” have taken on a whole new meaning.-Wooten Lee
