MAKING A FILM FOR ME IS LIVING America and Europe: Two Visions of CInema

During the filming of Beyond the Clouds, Michelangelo Antonioni’s wife Enrica shot this fascinating “making of” documentary. The AFI Fest is honored to screen this unique close-up of a master artist at work. “For the first time in his career, Michelangelo Antonioni agreed to have a camera on his set shooting himself at work. ‘Making a film for me is living,’ is a quote that Michelangelo wrote many years ago and which corresponds to real truth. I followed him through the sets for his four episodes (Beyond the Clouds), accompanied by his screenwriter and Wim
Wenders who filmed a linking frame between the episodes. I often could put my lens on him wherever he was looking, catching the reactions from the actors or the crew. So mine is a film on Michelangelo, shooting, thinking, inventing, looking, creating. My intention was just to be there, next to him, in the wonderful experience of shooting a new film, and I wanted to offer the
same experience to all of you who love his art.”-Enrica Antonioni. (Italy, 1995, 52 min.) Presented as part of the AFI Fest tribute to Michelangelo Antonioni.
