A stylistically photographed, moody story of a family in a rural Irish village in 1952. Young Eamon
Doyle lives with his fisherman father, a grumbling man set in his ways. Other young men in the
economically depleted area have emigrated to America to find a better life, only to find themselves
conscripted into the army to fight and die in the Korean war. One such victim is the son of the elderly
Doyle’s arch enemy Although the boy is buried with honors, the town is abuzz with news of the
compensation money his family will receive from the U.S. government. When Eamon falls in
love with the dead boy’s sister, his father hands him a ticket to America, leaving Eamon to draw
his own conclusions regarding his father’s motives.
