ON OUR SELECTION International Cinema

Based on turn of the century articles by Steele Rudd about his family, this lively Aussie efltry
delivers an earthy look at the hardships involved in working a small parcel of land (or “selection”).
In a sepia toned flashback, the family arrives at their 150 acre bush property, and then must fight
drought, plagues of kangaroos and the threat of takeover from a wealthy squatter. Brilliant, lusty performances
by veteran actor Leo McKern (Rumpole of the Bailey) and opera diva Joan Sutherland as
his perfectly matched wife are complemented by an outstanding supporting cast. With typically
wry Australian humor, they embody a nation of hardy survivors. Dedicated to “our centenary of
cinema,” this delightful film has just been nominated for four Australian film awards.
