A DRIFTING LIFE (LUMENG HUACHUN) Asia

Kun-cheng lives with his family on their
poor but stable farm. When his wife dies
suddenly in childbirth, he is left permanently
embittered and fatalistic. He leaves
the care of the farm and his children to his
parents, and embarks upon an affair with
a young widow. Several years pass in
quiet discontent until Kun-cheng’s mother
suffers from a stroke; his daughter, a gifted
student, stays at home to care for her
grandmother, thus missing her educational
opportunities. A felt meditation on the
deep and voiceless disappointments of a
lifetime, A Drifting Life suggests a vision of
existence “as a process of drifting in the
currents of fate, without hope or transcendent
purpose.” -Godfrey Cheshire,
