LUMIÈRE AND COMPANY (LUMIÈRE ET COMPAGNIE) European Union Film Showcase

A lively tip of the hat to the pioneers of the
moving picture, this film is an anthology of
short pieces by forty contemporary filmmakers
wt,o used a restored camera
which had belonged to the Lumiere brothers
to make their own “Lumiere” films.
Thus, the filmmakers were required to
work according to the same conditions
which prevailed at the time the Lumieres
made their films one hundred years ago:
the sequence could not exceed the 52 seconds
of film which fit inside the camera,
could not use sound, and could not be artificially
lit. While the short films display
widely varying locations, approaches and
styles, all of them do touch on one element
from a Lumiere film. Interwoven throughout
these “Lumiere” sequences is the complementary
footage of director Sarah Moon,
effectively uniting cinema’s forefathers and
its inventors of today. Includes pieces by
Peter Greenaway, Spike Lee, David Lynch,
Wim Wenders, Zhang Yimou.
