VAMPIRA: ABOUT SEX, DEATH AND TAXES European Union Film Showcase

Vampira, a.k.a. Mailo Nurmi, is a part of
the almost lost history of popular culture.
Presenter of the KABC TV station midnight
horror films, Vampira exuded a combination
of death and erotica that struck deep
into the subconscious of the uptight ’50’s.
Mailo Nurmi eventually lost the commercial
rights of the character she created to
Hollywood. The Hollywood Blacklist and
the subsequent financial difficulties made
her agree to a part in Plan 9 From Outer
Space, her first appearance in an Ed
Wood film. Vampira: about Sex, Death
and Taxes is a melancholy story of a bon
vivant and her struggle for a place in the
history of Hollywood’s dream factory.
