THE SUBSTANCE OF FIRE United States

A powerful and deeply moving drama
about the clash of a headstrong father and
his three grown children, The Substance of
Fire marks the motion picture directorial
debut of three-time Tony Award nominee
Daniel Sullivan. Holocaust survivor Isaac
Geldhart is a venomously witty publisher
who would rather sink his efforts into a sixvolume
history of Nazi medical experiments
rather than publish anything remotely
commercial. When his son. Aaron, a
partner in the firm, tries to convince him to
publish a potential best seller, Isaac_ r??uses
to even consider the poss1bil1ty.
Frustrated by his father’s obstinance,
Aaron enlists the help of his siblings,
Sarah, a quirky actress, and Martin, a se.nsitive
teacher. Until now, Sarah and Martin
have stayed out of such matters. But when
their father’s· stubborness puts the firm on
the brink of bankruptcy, they join their
brother in a determined effort to save the
family business. -Production notes
