One night in 1943, twenty-five year old
Leonard Bernstein stepped in to guest
conduct for the New York Philharmonic’s
ailing Bruno Walter and became an
overnight sensation. Two years later, he
was appointed symphony director – the
first American director of a major
orchestra in the world. Bernstein kept this
post for 11 years, travelling extensively
and winning international acclaim as both
conductor and composer.
Utilizing both personal and historic
materials, including interviews with many
of his contemporaries, a thorough portrait
of Bernstein emerges as a humanitarian
who assumed many roles and mastered
them all through his own blend of energy,
ego and passion.
