THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI Special Presentation

Robert Wiene’s seminal horror movie, THE CABINET OF DR.
CALIGARI, remains one of the most inspired and chilling exercises
in express paranoia ever made. The plot, about a hypnotist who
uses a sleepwalker to carry out his murders, resonates the gloom
and uncertainty which characterized post World War I Germany.
The film manages its haunting mood via its embracing of
expressionist set design and camera angles. This film has proved a
virtual map for the modern horror film. This special screening
should prove the perfect mood piece for Halloween.
The soundtrack for our screening, a mixture of hypnotic and
subliminal sound textures used to convey the film’s distorted
symbolism, was written and will be performed live by In The
Nursery. Commissioned to compose this score in 1996, In The
Nursery has also written music for INTERVIEW WITH THE
VAMPIRE, THE SWEET HEREAFTER, LA FEMME NIKITA and THE
RAINMAKER.
