NOT OF THIS WORLD (FUORI DAL MONDO) Official Selection

Caterina is a young nun about to take her perpetual vows. Ernesto owns a launderette and suffers both loneliness and a racing heart. Teresa is a youngster wandering Milan, trying to decide where to stay the night. And Fausto is the new-born baby Caterina discovers in the park. Her attempts to locate the mother of the mysterious infant suddenly bring all their lives together. The young nun’s search for the child’s mother propels Caterina into a relatiohship with Ernesto, causing both to reassess their lifestyles. T hey must consider what they want in addition to what they have given up for lost.

Giuseppe Piccioni renders Milan as a reflection of the mental state of the principal characters: cloudy, lonely, strangely quiet. Yet peripheral characters are also visited to provide a sense of the communities which Caterina, Teresa and Ernesto feel they have lost: the camera directly interviews the women who work at the launderette, or takes “group photos” of Teresa’s icecream parlour co-workers or Caterina’s fellow nuns. NOT OF THIS WORLD is about deciding where a person belongs, and with whom, and ultimately such decisions are made not only about Baby Fausto, but by Teresa, Ernesto and Caterina alike.

Winner of four David di Donatello Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actress and Best Screenplay.
