With some creative license, this screen adaptation of the world-famous novel SOPHIE’S WORLD sends a fifteen-year-old girl on an extensive journey through time and space. Alberto Knox, a mysterious philosophy teacher, first materializes on a televised report directly from the Socrates hearings in ancient Greece. Later, Sophie meets him in person during a visit to the Middle Ages. In between extraordinary travels in time, a scared but thrilled Sophie discovers an abandoned cabin in the forest close to her home that holds a secret. In a glimpse in a mirror she catches the image of a girl just like herself, but seemingly in a different dimension. Sophie gradually discovers the secret that has brought her to life.
At the turn of the millennium, SOPHIE’S WORLD tries to put into perspective how man has explained his existence since myths gave way to philosophy. Seen through the eyes of a girl on the threshold of womanhood, the director’s ambition has been to create an emotional and intriguing mystery-drama exploring the most essential of all questions: “Who am I?”
