LOYALTIES Documentary Competition

What if the past unexpectedly collided with the present? What if history began unfolding itself in an unpredictable manner? Two women face these questions and discover that their relationship extends further back in the past than they had previously imagined.

Carmelita Robertson is an African Nova Scotian who meets Dr. Ruth Holmes Whitehead, a Caucasian native from South Carolina. Their realizations about the past take an unexpected turn with the suspicion that perhaps Whitehead’s family had owned some of Robertson’s ancestors as slaves. Traveling back to the site of the old slave plantation, the two women are forced to confront issues of friendship through the lens of race.

This poignant and honest documentary shows that history can never be forgotten nor completely escaped. LOYALTIES serves as a true life lesson about the truth that the more things change, the more they stay the same.
