THE WIDOW OF SAINT PIERRE (LA VEUVE DE SAINT-PIERRE) International Competition

An epic drama directed by one of France’s leading auteurs and starring two of its greatest actors, THE WIDOW OF ST. PIERRE is set in 1 850 on the isle of Saint-Pierre, a small French territory off the coast of Canada.

A condemned murderer (noted director Emir Kusturica) awaits execution, while the French government ships a guillotine to the island for the event. Meanwhile, his custodians (Daniel Auteuil and Juliette Binoche) help him live his remaining days with humility and patience, transforming him into a productive member of the community. When the guillotine finally arrives by boat, and “justice” must be rendered, Madame La (Binoche) does her utmost to stop the execution. Aided by her husband and neighbors, they all must fight a remote, intransigent establishment in order to save one of their own.
